What to do in Torrevieja

Torrevieja (which means "old tower") is a seaside resort on the Costa Blanca, about 45 km south of Alicante. There is a lot to do and experience for young and old. Active, cultural or enjoying the beach... Everything is possible.

Torrevieja is known for its salt lakes. These turn pink and you can spot flamingos here. From the center there is a tourist train that goes in that direction so that you can view and photograph everything up close. Partly because of these salt lakes and (almost) no industry, Torrevieja is one of the places where the air is the purest in Europe.

Every Friday there is a huge market in Torrevieja. You can find this next to Aquapolis. It is the largest market in the area with almost 1200 stalls. You can go there from 8 a.m. for fresh fruit and vegetables, clothing, trinkets and much more.

Take a walk on the attractive boulevard towards Dique de Levante. This is a 1600m long pier that extends from the coast into the Mediterranean Sea and shields the harbor from the sea. From the tip you can look far out to sea and enjoy a beautiful sunset.

It is worth taking a stroll through the harbor. Here you can rent jet skis and boats or, while sitting on a terrace, enjoy everything that sails in and out of the harbor. Here you can find a few nice clubs for a night out. In the harbor you will also find  museo flotantes Delfin S-61 Albatros III.  This is a small museum and is located in a submarine. For a few euros you can take a look in a real submarine and experience what it was like under the sea surface. Highly recommended!

Another museum that tells something about the history of Torrevieja is Museo del Mar y de la Sal . Everything about shipping and salt events in the region is told here. There is an extensive collection of statues and sights made of salt.
There are a few good discos for the young people. Velice and El parking are the largest and best known. They are easily accessible by bus and if you cannot last until dawn, the buses run again at 8 a.m., you can always take a taxi back. There are more than enough of these and they are very affordable.

Of course Torrevieja has a beautiful church; Iglesia de la Immaculada Concepcion . Together with the Plaza de la Constitucion square,  it forms the core of the old center. If you are in Torrevieja at the right time (Semana Santa, Maundy Thursday to Easter Sunday), this is the place where the procession starts and will largely take place. This is a unique experience that is sure to impress.

There are various water sports activities in and around Torrevieja. Such as jet skiing, paddling, surfing, parasailing... everything for the real water lover.  La Mata Beach is 1.5 km from Playa del Cura. This is a beautiful wide sandy beach. This is also very easy to reach by bus. In addition to various water sports, you can also take a nice walk through the dunes or enjoy a snack and a drink in one of the restaurants and cafes.

For those who want a little more action than the calm waters of the Mediterranean, there are 2 Water Parks nearby, Aquapolis Torrevieja and Aquapark Flamengo. Here there is swimming fun for the whole family. Both parks are located near Torrevieja and are easily accessible by car. Please note that these parks are not open all year round.

For golf enthusiasts there are several courses nearby. The 3 closest are Villamartin Golf, Las Ramblas Golf and Las Colinas Golf & Country Club.

Finally, because we can keep busy, we would like to take a moment to look at the island of Tabarca. It is the smallest inhabited island in Spain. Tabarca is also called pirate island because it is said to have been a hideout for pirates in the past. In summer, boats leave for the island every day from the port of Torrevieja. Tabarca is also a protected island because of its nature. It is definitely recommended that when you go there, you go snorkeling and enjoy the beautiful flora and fauna underwater.

The apartment contains an information book with many more tips for sights and fun outings.
